Scientific Name: Alisterus scapularis

Also known as:

Bird Size

With a body as big as a small sized basketball (~45cm) the Australian King Parrot probably has the largest body of all parrots and is different from the others because of its bright red and green colours.

Bird Features, Colours, Behaviours

The female has a green head and its feathers change from green to red towards the middle.  The male has a bright red head and body and they both have darker green wings with a light green stripe at the top of their wings where their shoulders are (the female doesn’t always have this). They both have a small blue patch down their back at the top of their tail, near their rump. Young have their mum’s colours but their eyes’ irises are still brown, yet to change to adult yellow. The male’s beak is orange with a black tip and the females is more brown or red-grey. They usually eat seeds, blossoms, fruit and insects and they can be friendly.
